Foods to Avoid With Braces

Dr. Cruz puts on your braces using a special glue that is strong enough to keep the braces adhered to your teeth for the duration of treatment. However, your braces are not indestructible, meaning you need to check the braces food list and choose the right foods to eat when wearing braces and other appliances.

If your teeth are feeling tender or sore, look for soft foods that are easy to chew. Stay away from hard, chewy, or crunchy foods which can damage your braces or appliances. Also try to avoid sweets that can cause cavities.

The following is a list of some of the foods to avoid with braces during your treatment :

  • Ice
  • Taffy and caramel
  • Hard chips
  • Candy bars, Jolly Ranchers, and other hard candies
  • Popcorn & nuts
  • Carrots, pears, apples, etc. need to be cut into small pieces
  • Meat should be cut -- it should not be chewed off the bone
  • Corn on the cob should be sliced off
  • Pizza, bagels, crust and any other hard or crunchy breads need to be broken into bite-size pieces
Pencils, pens and fingernails do not belong in the mouth
An assortment of candy.
