YMCA SERVICES INCLUDE...
Elective Courses inspire kids to explore new activities, learn new skills and develop new interests.
Courses include:
ART
Ages: 5-8 and 9-12
Did you know that research has shown that young people who participate in the arts for a continued amount of time and throughout their young years are far more likely to succeed in academics at school and participate in math and science fairs? The facts are that arts education can make a tremendous impact on the developmental growth of every child and has proven to help level the ‘learning field’ across socioeconomic boundaries. The YMCA Art Club exposes youth to mediums, techniques, and a variety of time periods in our history that have significant ties to cultural events and traditions. We hope to achieve an appreciation for art through the club.
COOKING
Ages: 5-8 and 9-12
Children, especially young children, rely on their senses to explore the world. Cooking offers students opportunities to use the senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. Working with food lets a child focus on their senses individually as well as collectively. Cooking teaches a child how to use their eyes, ears, nose, skin, and tongue to observe things, in addition to improving their fine motor skills when helping out in the kitchen. This beginner’s course focuses on more than just cooking, but dives deeper into the culinary arts and the professional positions in any kitchen.
ENGINEERING: Makerspace: Engineering for Beginners
Ages: 5-8 and 9-12
The Engineering course teaches students the fundamentals and importance of engineering in a real-world context. Children learn about the history of engineering and its application in landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Coliseum, and the Empire State Building. From there, they apply their knowledge through activities and projects where they learn about tension, weight-bearing structures, windmills, bridges, and more. Engineering Club opens students’ minds to the idea that engineering is all around us, is applied to many things we see and use on a daily basis, and is FUN! This course is beginner-level and allows all to practice critical thinking skills, challenge their imaginations, and come up with solutions to real-world problems. Makerspace time will be built into each class for free design with upcycled materials.

KEEPING FIT [PE]
Ages: 5-8 and 9-12
Children are our future—and understanding and supporting their natural yearning for physical activity will help lead them to a lifetime of happy and healthy living. Warm-ups, activities, group games, and group sports are delineated for each day and focus on 8 areas of sports skills. Basketball, Football, Handball, Kickball, Soccer, Track and Field, Ultimate Frisbee, and Volleyball, help prepare students for a life of physical fitness, fitness testing, improved social/emotional awareness, and self-esteem. Activities and sports can be adjusted depending on the age and skill level of students.
SCIENCE
Ages: 5-8 and 9-12
There are three simple reasons why science is important for our children: they love science because it engages their curiosity, provides practical tools for understanding everyday life, and advances their critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Whether a child gains an interest in becoming a doctor, lawyer, or teacher, developing a scientific mindset is critical to enhancing a child’s cognitive growth, logic, and reasoning.
SIGN LANGUAGE
Ages: 5-8 and 9-12
Aside from the fact that children will be learning a second language, the learning of American Sign Language develops awareness and sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity. This beginners course provides cultural enrichment and is the best means of fostering understanding between children who are hard of hearing and those who are not. Furthermore, learning sign language can help a child recognize words if they are connected to a sign.
CREATIVE WRITING
Ages: 11-17
Attention Middle School and High Schoolers! Do you love books and movies? Have you ever had a story in your heart but didn’t know how to share it with others? People love a great story. Good stories make us feel emotions that can change the way we see the world and the people around us. In the 8 Days workbook, author Jane Garrett walks students through planning, writing, and self-publishing their very own short stories. Through the woven tapestry of story elements, she helps students organize their ideas into a comprehensive outline. Step by step, she leads this journey from idea to finished story. With thoughtful guidance, attention to detail, and a war chest full of writing aids, the 8 Days to Save the World creative writing workbook turns students into self-published authors! FULL 8 Week Registration is required if you want to be published in our short story collective. The book will be sent to the publisher after the completion of the course, and the Program Director will reach out to communicate how to get your FREE copy of the book, once it is complete. Next Session: January 5th- February 23rd (two months of registration is required for a total cost of Members $350; Non-Members $400).

PHOTOGRAPHY
Ages: 5-8 and 9-12
Children grow up in a visual world and everything that they see helps develop their personality and character. Having kids learn photography at an early age can stimulate their creativity and provide a meaningful outlet for self-expression. Hello and welcome to the YMCA Homeschool Electives and Support Programs! My name is Christine Cruse and I am the Senior Program Director for the Homeschool Programs at the YMCA of Orange County. I have been working in extended learning for 15 years and have been with the YMCA since 2015. I am excited for the implementation and expansion of enriching learning opportunities for the youth in the communities we serve.
Our Homeschool Electives & Support Programs are a new addition to our already robust array of enrichment and youth offerings. We currently partner with charter schools, private schools, and, in-home educators, however, this program extends our offerings of coursework outside of the core curriculum and will target the interest of the child. Our curriculum is diverse, and thorough and will challenge the way your child sees the world around them! In addition, our programs are designed to support the social-emotional development of children of all ages, while keeping the “family” feel of home education. Our small groups are together regardless of age and instruction is intentionally designed to support peer learning and leadership. Our lunch and social hour focus on teamwork, healthy competitions, and the building of socialization skills.
Our staff is highly-trained, certified in their fields, and passionate about education. Our environment is safe, secure, and supportive creating the ideal place for learning and thriving. We believe by supporting all forms of education, children will experience success.
I look forward to speaking with you soon and seeing your family at one of our programs!
Sincerely,
Staff Testimonial:
“When working with kids, one of the greatest things to see is how imaginative each child truly is. As an instructor, the best part of the day is seeing the excitement that goes into everything they do. Every student has something special to contribute, and Homeschools’ continuous focus on teaching through creativity and self-expression is what makes this program thrive!” -Drea Rodriguez
